IMIG SMC Handbook of Clinical Communication
A free, open-access resource developed by the Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG) of Sindh Medical College, to help clinicians and students communicate with patients across Pakistan's linguistic diversity, one of the country's most overlooked barriers to accurate diagnosis and compassionate care.
About the Handbook
Pakistan is home to dozens of languages, yet medical education and clinical history-taking are conducted almost entirely in English. When a patient cannot describe their symptoms in a language their clinician understands, diagnosis suffers and trust breaks down. This 137 page handbook offers a complete, ready-to-use history-taking template, Biodata through Socio-Economic History, translated into Urdu, Sindhi, Punjabi, Balochi and Pashto, alongside the original English.
What's Inside
- A full clinical history-taking framework across all 12 standard sections, in six languages.
- Specialty wise presenting-complaint checklists covering Neurology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Pulmonology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, ENT and Ophthalmology.
- Roman script phonetic transliteration of every translation, so any clinician can read it aloud without knowing the native script.
- QR linked native speaker pronunciation videos for every language section.
- Per language glossary tables: numbers, time, body parts, common symptom words, and basic clinical commands for quick bedside use.
Built on Rigor
Each translation was prepared by native speaking medical students, proofread by native speaking House Officers and Postgraduate Trainees, and given a final review by native speaking professors and lecturers from Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta before publication.
Who It's For
MBBS, BDS, nursing and allied health students, house officers and postgraduate trainees, and any clinician treating patients across Pakistan's regional language communities.
