CYBER SEURITY GUIDELINES
FOR JSMU FACULTY , STAFF & STUDENTS

Purpose

To promote a culture of cybersecurity awareness and responsible digital behavior across the university, ensuring a safe and secure environment for academic, administrative, and personal activities online.

General Best Practices (For All Users):

  • Use Strong Passwords: Use complex and unique passwords for every account. Avoid using personal information like names or birthdates.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Always turn on 2FA wherever possible for added security.
  • Regular Software Updates: Keep operating systems, apps, and antivirus software up to date.
  • Avoid Suspicious Links: Never click on suspicious links or download attachments from unknown sources.
  • Backup Data: Regularly back up important data to secure storage (cloud or external drives).

Guidelines for Students

  • Protect Your Identity Online: Do not share personal or academic information on unverified websites or with strangers online.
  • Safe Use of Social Media: Be respectful, avoid sharing offensive content, and keep profiles private when possible.
  • Report Cyberbullying: If you experience or witness cyberbullying, report it to a faculty advisor or the university's IT department immediately.
  • Use University Resources Wisely: Access only academic-related content on university networks. Avoid streaming or downloading pirated content.

Guidelines for Faculty

  • Secure Student Data: Always keep students' personal and academic data confidential. Use encrypted systems for storage and communication.
  • Verify Emails Before Responding: Be cautious of phishing emails requesting login credentials or financial information.
  • Online Class Security: Use secure platforms for virtual classes. Use passwords and waiting rooms in online meetings.
  • Lead by Example:Promote responsible digital behavior and share cybersecurity tips during lectures where relevant.

Guidelines for Staff and Administration

  • Handle Sensitive Data Responsibly: Financial records, employee files, and institutional data must be handled securely and stored on protected systems.
  • Email Vigilance: Be extra careful when opening emails with financial transactions or attached files.
  • Follow Security Protocols: Adhere to university IT policies, including regular password changes and incident reporting procedures.
  • Limit Social Media Exposure:Avoid posting university-related confidential or sensitive information on social platforms.

University Infrastructure and Protection

JSMU has implemented the Firewall system to support cyber safety:

  • Content & Web Filtering: Blocks harmful websites and limits social media access during office hours.
  • Intrusion Prevention System (IPS): Detects and prevents malicious activities.
  • Application Control: Restricts unauthorized apps to protect the network.
  • Anti-Virus & Anti-Malware:Scans and removes threats in real-time.
  • Bandwidth Management: Ensures fair network usage.
  • Monitoring & Reporting: Tracks user activity to help detect and investigate incidents.
